The miss-it test applies to the builders: if you can change it and still do not use it, something is missing

The most important users of a product are the people who decide its roadmap. If the developers, the product owner and the founder have access, can change it, and still do not use it, something is missing, and it is not the code. Dinis says he failed this test with The Cyber Boardroom, MyFeeds and early on sgit as a startup, good ideas he was not using; the vaults pass it now, 54 of them published, because they are used every day and the next release fixes what was hit. A team that uses something else, or uses its product only for the demo, is a signal nothing in the code gives.

Decided by. Nobody yet: a candidate for Dinis to read, comment on and decide (keep, rewrite, merge, cut, article first, later, not doing it).

Note. The article says 'one user is not a market' and that why the earlier startups did not take off has more than one reason; not using them is the one Dinis can see and act on. The Apple comparison is 'as far as I can see from the outside'. The second half of the article, the brief for the reader's own vault, is a product brief and not for the book.

Where it comes from

What it answers in the 2018 book

Where it goes

Chapter Ship it, and see if they miss it, part Start the company (drafting); topic Be a founder (or a one-person service).

Other ideas proposed for the same chapter: Ship it, give it away briefly, take it away, and ask whether they miss it, The speed of the loop from a comment to a feature is the moat, not the technology, SG/Send: first commit on 8 February, live on 13 February, Stripe on 1 March, ten paying customers on 2 March, a feature request shipped in 90 minutes, The technology worked and the use case did not: 'users buy credits, test once, and don't come back'.
