evidence candidate goes to: this-edition A all three
The expert founders, in numbers: 45 is the mean age, experience doubles the odds, a third of US startups have one founder
In a study of 2.7 million US founders the mean age at founding of the 1-in-1,000 fastest-growing new ventures is 45.0, and founders with three or more years in the same industry reached top-tier growth at twice the rate of those with none. Carta: solo founders rose from 23.7% of new US startups in 2019 to 36.3% in the first half of 2025. Stripe: its top 100 AI companies reached $1 million in annualised revenue in a median of 11.5 months. The venture model behind the outsider playbook: in Horsley Bridge's data on just over 7,000 investments from 1985 to 2014, about half returned less than the original investment and 6% of deals produced 60% of total returns. The experts were never held back by knowledge; they were held back by access to capital, engineers and the long build before anything could be shown, which is the part that got cheap.
Decided by. Nobody yet: a candidate for Dinis to read, comment on and decide (keep, rewrite, merge, cut, article first, later, not doing it).
Note. The article says the AI growth figures are the fastest, not the typical, and some are the promoter's own. Azoulay, Jones, Kim and Miranda, Age and High-Growth Entrepreneurship, AER: Insights, 2020. Dinis's Gen ZX article repeats the 45 and the one-third in its 'Precisely' section.
