RC2 on paper, part 3. Pages 10 to 13, chapter 2, where the pen asks for evidence and room: thirty-two notes, three new themes, a margin that marks fact from opinion, and the first QR codes

Abstract. The third batch of Dinis's pen on the printed release candidate 2 covers pages 10 to 13, chapter 2, You are lucky to be here, from a café table with a Save the Clock Tower bag on the seat. Thirty-two notes, 52 to 83. The chapter's real opening is on page 12 ("this is what should be on that intro in page 10"), and the history of the 2018 book on page 10 "is not relevant in page 10". Three themes are new. Fact or opinion, visibly: "we need a visual way to reference to the reader facts or opinion", fact backed by data, opinion with no data yet, and where the text apologises for being one person's account, "find data to support this". The website holds what the page cannot: concepts like UI and generative AI need a short analogy and a link, and the margin asks "what about using QR codes here?". And, for the first time, what works: six ticks, including the list of transformations and the dot-com crash where it is. The last note on page 13 is the biggest: recommend the workflow Dinis is using right now, reading on paper with a pen while an agent captures the notes, as the way to read this book, and any book. Dinis's memo with the batch turned the QR codes and that workflow into an article of their own; this one carries the pages, a sketch of the margin system with working QR codes, and a short strip.

In short

  • Pages 10 to 13: chapter 2, You are lucky to be here. Thirty-two notes, 52 to 83.
  • The chapter starts on page 12. "this is what should be on that intro in page 10"; the 2018 history on page 10 "is not relevant".
  • Fact or opinion, visibly. A mark for each: fact backed by data, opinion with no data yet; and find the data.
  • The website holds what the page cannot. A short analogy, then a link; and QR codes where the page needs room.
  • What works, kept. Six ticks: the doom, the list of transformations, the crash, undivided attention, the closing line.
  • Read with a pen. The last note: recommend the workflow of this review as the way to read the book, and any book.
  • A sketch of the margin, with real codes. Facts, opinions, stories and concepts marked, and QR codes that scan.

Part of a series

The third article of RC2 on paper. Part 1 has pages 1 to 3 and how the pages are drawn; part 2 has pages 4 to 9 and chapter 1. The record of this batch is admin/content/reviews/paper/rc2-03.json.

The printed release candidate open at pages 12 and 13 on a café table, with a pen, a teapot, a milk jug, a cup of tea, and a tote bag reading Save the Clock Tower on the seat
Table 14, pages 12 and 13. The bag on the seat says Save the Clock Tower.

The chapter opens on Dinis's own wonder ("I discover things I can do"), and the pen moves it to the reader: "this should be about the READER, the ZX founder". The woman on the podcast nobody can find goes ("yeah can't find it"), and the feeling is told in Dinis's name, "since I also felt like this". Then the history: how the first edition started, the logos slide, the zone, Start with why; "this book history is not relevant in page 10". Beside the next section, "Whoever is reading this in 2026 or 2027 is ridiculously privileged": "Now we are getting there :)". And of the essay Dinis could not get past the paywall of: "the fact that I tried to read is not relevant".

The essay's headline "is strong enough", or "you should be able to find other articles or statistics". "That is my reading, not a measurement, and this edition still owes you a proper answer to it": "this phrasing is weird". Then the first ticks of the series: "ignore the doom", "exactly"; the list of transformations, "good", and, as I read it, "format better"; the dot-com crash, asked about in a For Dinis box, "yes here (this section) is good". The 2018 outline on the BBS is struck out with a wave.

The busiest page of the batch, and the one that asks for the most. At the top: "we need a visual way to reference to the reader facts or opinion that I do here: fact, backed by data; opinion, no data (yet) to support". Beside "It is one person's account, not a study": "find data to support this". The paragraph that should open the chapter, the biggest opportunity of your career, is here, bracketed: "this is what should be on that intro in page 10". The 2018 dopamine chapter is struck. Then the reader's questions: "most readers don't know what UI or interface is", and, from the ZX founder, "what is generative AI?". "Where do you land?": "say it first, then link". In the margin, sideways: "what about using QR codes here?", and across the foot of the page, the rule for all of it: "find a way to introduce the reader to these concepts with short clear analogies, infographics, stories & links to our site for more details".

How to read this book. "Read it on paper" is backed: "there is data to support this", that paper and book reading is better to learn, so the hedge "that is my experience rather than a finding" goes. "So do not skip them": "that is not our recommendation, I think". "That is why the title says developer": "not anymore :)". Beside the craftspeople who made their own tools: "Brian May story, Queen", the guitarist who built his own guitar. Two ticks, for undivided attention and the closing line. And across the bottom of the page, the note that started an article: "Actually I think we should expand & recommend here the workflow that I (right now) am having with you (Claude) where you are understanding & capturing my ideas as I read this RC & is something that I want to start doing the next time I read a book."

The themes, after three batches

The first pages sell the book 4, 5, 12, 26, 47 52, 67
Show the book, do not list it 1, 2, 6, 9, 27, 39 81
Topics first, details under them 7, 10, 29, 37, 40, 44, 48 57
The making-of out of the reader's way 3, 13, 14, 16, 17, 45, 46 55, 62, 68
The voice is mine 15, 28, 30 to 33, 35, 36, 38, 43 53, 54, 59, 65, 72, 73, 78, 80
Meet the reader where they are 23, 24, 25, 34, 41, 42, 49 69, 70, 74, 79, 83
Fact or opinion, visibly (new) 58, 64, 66, 76
The website holds what the page cannot (new) 71, 75
What works, keep it (new) 56, 60, 61, 63, 77, 82

The new theme to watch is the evidence one. It is the newsroom's rule, "not found is not false", turned into a mark on the page: the reader should see which sentences carry data and which carry an opinion, and the opinions should be fewer every release, as the data is found.

The margin, sketched

Sketch: a page of chapter 2 with four kinds of mark in the margin (fact, opinion, story, concept), a concept explained with a car's dashboard, and three QR codes to the site
Notes 64 to 75: a fact with its source, an opinion marked as one, a story marked as Dinis's own, a concept explained in a line, and QR codes where the page needs more room. The codes are real: scan one.

The codes in the sketch work. Each prints a short address on this site, gen-z-developers.sgit.ai/q/<id>/, which sends the reader on to the source; the list of codes says where each goes. How they work, and what else they make possible, is in the article Dinis's memo became: Paper that talks both ways.

The strip

Scan me, six panels: Marta, the printed book, a word she does not know, and a code in the margin. The pacing experiment this time is the cut: one panel on the page, one on the phone, and back, the way the reader's attention actually moves between the two.

What I need from Dinis

  • Note 61. Beside the list of transformations: "good", then, as I read it, "format better". Is that right?
  • Note 78. Beside the paragraph on how to use the rest of the book: "Reword from an '...' approach". I read "adult first"; it could be something else.

What this does not claim

  • The reading is mine, word for word; two readings are uncertain and listed above.
  • The fact in the sketch is marked "to find". That paper beats a screen for learning is what note 76 says the data shows; the book cites the studies when they are found.
  • The margin marks are a proposal. Four marks and a QR code; the editor and the illustrator decide the design.
  • The QR ids are the first seven. The rest are added as the editor places them.

Where this comes from

Dinis's five photographs of 19 October 2026 (pages 10 to 13 of the printed release candidate 2, and the table), and his voice memo with them. The candidate's text is v2/versions/v2.0.0-rc2.md. Written by the journalist, in its own voice, as decision 007 asks.
